đźš—Bowral - Sydney

📝 Day's Highlights

• climbing the Bridge

Today I did one of the scariest things I have ever tried.

The day started well. I like the hotel because it is quiet, and to wake up hearing the birds singing is a lovely start to the day. After breakfast, back on the road and heading for Sydney. The drive wasn’t too bad, though I lost my way when I got close to the hotel and went round the block at least once. It is such a contrast - from the quiet of Bowral to the hustle and bustle of Sydney.

After checking in, I took a taxi to the Rocks (the site of the original settlement in Sydney). Once there I had some lunch (more kangaroo). Then off to the high point of my trip – climbing the Harbour Bridge. I got there in plenty of time, which was good because I had time to discuss my Autism with the duty manager – a delightful lady who had a very good understanding of what ND people might need.

It turned out that there were two ladies from Melbourne who also needed help, so the three of us climbed the “inside” route (climbing the lower arch rather than the upper one). It certainly made me feel safer, though walking on the catwalks to get out to the arch was terrifying!

🧠 Fact of the Day

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is hinged at either end to allow for expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. The top can rise by up to 8 inches!

Anyway, we all made it to the top. Our guide was a lovely man – very understanding and allowed us to take our time. When we reached the summit, we climbed up to the upper arch, so I made it to the very top. The climb down was easier because it was dark, meaning that you couldn’t see the water through the catwalks!

Views from the Bridge

When I got down, I was mentally exhausted. After a quiet sit down, I walked back to the hotel for a shower.

Oh - I also had my first proper rain since I got here – right at the top of the bridge!
