đźš— Kangaroo Island - Berri

📝 Day's Highlights

• driving

A day of waiting and driving.

Due to check-out time, I was at the ferry terminal too early. After an hour, I was on board the Spirit of Kangaroo Island, going back across Backstairs Passage. I don’t know if it was where I was sitting, but this ferry seemed much more stable than the one I went to KI on. I sat watching the sea – under the blue skies it was a beautiful blue-green, while under the clouds it was a sullen grey. The wind was force 5-6, gusting to force 7, and the sea was rolling in, having nothing south of it for thousands of miles.

Then the driving. The car I have is very good at eating up the miles, which is just as well. I did about 90 minutes then stopped in Hahndorf for a break. It was quite a shock – after driving along almost empty roads, the town was rammed. And to find a town selling cuckoo clocks! I was lucky to find a parking space, and as I left, there was already someone to take my space.

Then more driving over mostly empty roads. I had to switch off the sat-nav and trust my nose, because it kept wanting to take me along the motorways into Adelaide. Anyway, I won the battle, and eventually it agreed with me (and Google Maps). I was approaching a junction, and I though “nearly there”. No such luck. I turned onto the Sturt Highway, and the sat-nav informed me I had 125km to go. And the road was long, straight (15km straights) and mostly dull. All in, I have driven nearly 900km in 3 days.

The Australians are great at reusing names. Today I went through Sedan and Cambrai (renamed from Rhine River during WW1).

Anyway, I reached the hotel after nearly 5 hours of driving (and this was not my longest day). After a shower, it was off for dinner. I am surprised the kangaroo is not extinct, as it is absolutely delicious!

After seeing kangaroos, I must admit to feeling a little bit bad about eating kangaroo for dinner (even though it is delicious!). Now I am sitting listening to the wind blowing through the trees outside – and I have the ferry tomorrow.
