Back in the car and heading north.
Overall, I wasn’t sorry to leave Melbourne. Yes, there are several things that I wish I had done. However, the overall assault on my senses made me long for somewhere a bit quieter, especially in my hotel room.
Driving out of Melbourne I got lost (again). My sat-nav always wants me to use the motorways, whereas I am always looking for the side roads. The trick is to find somewhere a long way from the motorway and put that as your destination. Even doing that, I still got lost, but eventually was out on the open road.
As I left Melbourne, the skies cleared and the temperature rose. I don’t know if it is because I am further east than I was before, but there were more trees on my drive, and they looked less parched. I drove over some hills which were lovely and lush.
Bendigo has an established feel. There is a lot of interesting architecture, along with plenty of mature trees. I arrived too early to check-in, so I took a walk down into the centre to find something to eat.

Welcome shade
I had a lovely meal, then back up to the hotel, check-in, then back down again. I just walked around enjoying the city – and when I got tired of walking, I sat in Rosalind Park under the trees. It was so peaceful and a complete contrast to the chaos I felt in Melbourne.
Poppet Head lookout
To end the day, I climbed up to Poppet Head Lookout for some views over Bendigo. It is an old mine head. I was hoping to go to the top but it was closed.
