• St Peter’s Cathedral
• a hot walk
• the Malt Shovel
Today started well. I went to St Peter’s Cathedral for the BCP Eucharist. It was only after the service that it struck me that today would have been mum’s birthday. It really upset me, and I found it hard to pray about. Thankfully, I got talking with the man who had been assisting at the service. He was very gentle and understanding – we talked and then he prayed for me. It made me feel much better.

Then I went for a walk alongside the river. I was checking my notebook for ideas, and I had put some items in with notes such as “20 minutes’ walk”, “40 minutes’ walk”. Boy, was I being optimistic! In this heat (the news said it reached 33C today) even 5 minutes’ walk could seem too much.
Strolling around Adelaide
Seeking respite from the heat, I went to the Migration Museum. This was very interesting, as it told the story of the various waves of immigrants that settles in S Australia. However, the most interesting part was the building that had served as a destitute asylum and lying-in hospital (maternity ward) for the poor of Adelaide. It had some heart-rending stories such as the lady who had 3 illegitimate children and was abandoned by each of their fathers. Hanging from the ceiling were strips of paper with the name of every child born there. It was beautifully and respectfully done.

South Australia was founded as a free colony, not a penal colony
Then I gave into the heat. Seeking lunch, I wandered into the Malt Shovel, and sort of stayed for a few hours. The food was good, the beer was good, and I was sitting on the patio overlooking the river while watching South Australia win the Sheffield Shield (cricket) for the first time in 29 years.

Feeling refreshed, I wandered back to the hotel.
