No wonder I was confused. Labour Day is celebrated on four different days in Australia, depending upon which state or territory you are in. For Queensland it was today. One thing that surprised me was that it was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. I thought that with so many people off work, the cafes would be open to attract trade (particularly as so many businesses apply a 10-15% surcharge for public holidays). But no – I could not find a single coffee shop open. In the end, I abandoned my search.
Used cookware anyone?
Having nothing better to do, I sat in Queen Street Mall and enjoyed the good old-fashioned pleasure of people-watching. I was just about to get some lunch when I had a migraine, so had to sit for another half-hour until it passed.
After lunch (still feeling a bit under the weather) I went back to the hotel. I have found a very cheap way to take a break from my hotel. North Quay ferry stop is only a couple of hundred yards from there, and you can take a ferry downstream and back for only 50c (about 25p). And Brisbane looks its best at night from the water.
Beautiful Brisbane
