Happy May Day! Yes, May is here already. I am nearly three-quarters of my way through my holiday. Though I hope I am much more than three-quarters of my way through the driving. This was the last of my long drives. I have now driven 4,378km – or to put that in Manx terms, 91 trips to Ramsey and back.

I managed to get away nice and early this morning. The traffic was light and soon I was heading down Waterfall Way. It may be the way to the waterfalls, but it was full of roadworks and potholes. In Australia, you see a sign for potholes, and you don’t know if you are going to get car-rattling thumps or holes filled in with loose gravel that you skate on. Even worse are the signs that say “rough surface” – sometimes it feels like a collection of patches that try to shake your teeth loose!

I did see one waterfall. I needed a pitstop and turned off at a rest area at Ebor Falls. I wasn’t sure what to expect but they were magnificent. I wonder what they look like in the Wet!

Back in the car, and after a stop for coffee it was onto the motorway. This was fairly quiet until I reached the Gold Coast. Then the traffic really built up. I was glad to leave the motorway and turn for an uphill climb to my destination. The roads were so steep that there were signs prohibiting passengers from standing on buses!
